Essentially the blueprint for the next decade of the composer's career, its beauty and power nevertheless remain undimmed by subsequent variations on its formula. What immediately leaps to the fore is Indochine's grandiose sound, the product of a 120-member orchestra. Sweeping strings dominate, but bursts of brass and rumbling percussion take their turns in the spotlight as well, and the sheer epic scope of Doyle's vision is impressive in and of itself. But upon deeper listening it's the melodies that shine brightest. Bold, lyrical and expressive, the music captures Doyle at the peak of his compositional prowess, with an emotional intensity unmatched across his other scores.
