Tendai, who hails from Zimbabwe, was born into music. She loves to write and sing and has the versatility of a chameleon: when it comes to songwriting, she incorporates elements from every culture she has encountered into her performance. Tendai was born on September 20th 1984, to a very musical family which served as her initial inspiration to pursue music. Her father, Jonathan Wutawunashe, is a very talented and versatile musician who plays an array of instruments including the piano, guitar and the harmonica. He is also a gifted producer with an unfaltering ear. Shuvai Wutawunashe, Tendai’s mother, is also a musician of note who has released fourteen successful records since the 1980s. Tinashe Wutawunashe, loving brother and acclaimed musical kindred spirit to Tendai has just about the most insane ideas when it comes to music. Tendai has described him as a true innovator who she will never stop making music with. Tendai started working in her father’s studio at the age of fifteen while she was completing high school. It is there that she discovered her passion for vocal arrangement and began cultivating this passion into an undeniable talent that she exercised by arranging background for her father’s clients. She also started writing her own songs and recorded her first offering entitled Fear Not which released in 2002 just prior to her move to India with her family. After spending a year there, Tendai came to California to pursue her college degree in Music and Recording Arts. Tendai was very fortunate to have the opportunity to travel with her family while growing up. Her father, being a diplomat, exposed her to many different countries. From Belgium to India, Tendai has traveled the globe and taken a piece of every musical tradition she has encountered and when you hear her sing, you can feel it in the spirit of her voice, her movements, and the rhythms. In her, there is the unmistakable spirit of freedom to express without fear or pretense and you know as soon as the words escape her lips that she only sings them because they are the truth. Since she got here, she has been a featured soloist countless times at the showcases held at school, done collaborations with many of the local talent, and recorded many songs, each time with an endeavor to create something new that no one has heard before. Nothing gives her more joy than to express herself in song before people and to touch their hearts, bringing them into the knowledge of what God has done in her life. Every song Tendai has ever sung has truly been an offering of love and she will continue to sing, never stopping, until she has breathed her last breath. Renewed is a collection of personal experiences Tendai has been through on her spiritual walk with God. It is a harmony of Afro-Centric rhythms, inspiring lyrics and deliciously intricate vocal arrangments guaranteed to relax and elate the heart of the listener. Enjoy it
