Buddy Rich in London
by Scott Yanow Although three of the selections on this LP have been reissued as part of the Time Being CD, the album is still well worth searching for. The Buddy Rich big band is heard throughout in inspired and peak form. Tenor saxophonist Pat LaBarbera is the main soloist, although strong contributions are also made by trombonist Bruce Paulson, pianist Bob Dogan, high-note trumpeter Lin Biviano and the drummer/leader. "That's Enough" (a spirited vocal number for Kathy Rich, the young Michelle Hendricks and Carlene Hendricks) is a change of pace. Also a bit unusual is a closing three-minute monologue in which Rich talks to the audience with humor and sarcasm. Other highlights include "Dancing Men," "Little Train," "Two Bass Hit" and the lengthy "Time Being." The European version of this set is a double LP with five additional selections. A gem.
